Planning Winter Vacations & Romantic Get Aways

Jerry’s Travel Tips- As you are planning a winter vacation for your family or romantic get away for couples or singles consider some of the destinations listed as they are recommended from our own travel experiences. My wife and I have traveled together as a married couple for over 30 years and have visited many places in the Caribbean Islands, Europe, United States, Mexico and other parts of the world. We live in the New York City Metro area so our recommendations may differ from singles or couples that live elsewhere. Although there are still many places in the world on our “travel want list”, we have our favorite spots that we continue to make return visits to regularly, as they are perfect vacation spots for our lifestyle and meet our expectations of places to visit. When we plan our vacations for the year we decide on the type of vacation we want and the kind of activities that will interest us. Ask yourself these questions - will this be a vacation for total rest & relaxation?, do we want to go to a place we’ve never been?, a romantic get away?, sightseeing & cultural? Family vacation? A return visit vacation? As you plan make a list of your vacation priorities and match a location that will be comfortable with. Consider all the family members interests in your vacation plans and get their ideas of what fun activities and attractions they would like to see.

Winter vacation plans differ for each individual, some think of a winter vacation as a place to go skiing or do other winter sports. Others think of a winter vacation as a place to enjoy a warm tropical climate to get away from the winters cold weather at home. Here is a list of some popular winter vacation spots and recommended places to visit.

Caribbean- Include a Caribbean vacation at least once in your planning to any of the islands or surrounding territories. One of the most beautiful small islands in this area is Aruba. The island is Dutch owned and part of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao). We have vacationed in Aruba for the past 8 years and will continue to go back every year, the weather is beautiful because it is outside of the hurricane belt. If you haven’t been to Aruba put it on the top of your list of places to go. The conditions are so predictable that there are basically no local weather forecasts or reports.  Having very little rainfall you can count on beautiful weather almost everyday in Aruba. Other popular Caribbean destinations are; Trinidad, Tobago, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Grenada, St Croix and St Thomas

Hawaii- We vacationed two times in Hawaii, once in Maui and once in Oahu. On our first visit to the Hawaiian Islands we went to Oahu and stayed at a resort on Waikiki Beach. We traveled around the entire island and visited the major tourist attractions like; Honolulu, Diamond Head Mountain, Pearl Harbor, The Arizona Memorial and more. On our second visit to Hawaii we went to Maui and stayed at the Marriott. There are a lot of tourist activities and watersports on all the islands like; sightseeing, hiking, biking, surfing, dinner cruises, snorkeling, helicopter tours, luaus, hula shows, night entertainment and more. This is one of the most unique vacation spots with a one of a kind landscape and climate. Loved by all who visit. Make Hawaii a priority on your vacation list of places to go. The perfect place for weddings, honeymoon, anniversary or just a romantic getaway. Choose any of the tropical islands they are all beautiful - Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, Maui, or The Big Island. Each of the islands are a photographers dream for taking digital photos and pictures of the colorful Hawaiian landscape, scenic views, waterfalls, foliage and colorful flowers. Points of interest include, Honolulu, Haleakala Crater, Mauna Kea, Diamond Head, Kilauea volcano,

Mexico- A hot vacation destination for couples and singles. We have vacationed in Acapulco four times and Cancun twice. They are different in their landscapes as Cancun has white sand beaches and Acapulco has golden colored beaches. Acapulco is like a large cut out cove in the coastline and the ocean water is usually calm. The Princess Hotel is located outside of Acapulco bay and is a first class resort facing the ocean with a very wide whitish sand beach. Cancun is also very nice and is a place to party. Geared toward a younger crowd there are many discos and nightclubs.

Florida- from Orlando to Miami to the Keyes. One of the hottest party places for the younger crowd to hangout at is South Beach, party is the word 24/7 with martini bars, clubs and Latin music. Beautiful beaches and warm ocean water this is a bikini beach paradise where topless sunbathing is allowed. Popular, easy to get to -offers miles of beaches, theme parks,

Las Vegas- one of a kind gamblers paradise with slot machines, poker, roulette, in the casinos and gambling, non stop shows and entertainment. Travel agencies and resorts are continuously advertising specials for vacation packages with all inclusive accommodations including airfare, meals and hotel stays. Other points of interest and places to go sightseeing in Nevada are the Grand Canyon, Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam. A place where everyone should plan to visit at least once in their lifetime.

New York City- What else is there to say. A unique to only one in the world and visited by tourists from all over the world. The city never sleeps. No matter what time of year you decide to visit there are hundreds of events going on everyday. NYC is a great place to be in on holidays like Thanksgiving – the Macy’s Day Parade, Christmas and New Years Eve to watch the ball drop and bring in the new year with celebrations on every corner downtown to uptown. The spring and summer the city is filled with cultural exhibits, music festivals, art galleries, museums, performing arts, Broadway shows, plays, theater and other events. Tourist attractions like; the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, Empire State Building, WTC,  Rockefeller Center. And of course a visit to Central Park is a must as it is a unique park in the middle of the busiest city in the world.

California- Beautiful vacation places throughout the entire state, breath taking west coast with miles of scenic coastline, dramatic landscapes and beaches. Major areas to visit are San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Monterey, Palm Springs, Napa, Sonoma, California Wine Country and many more. There are many amusement parks, theme parks and zoos in California - Disneyland, Knots Berry Farm, Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Zoo. We love California and have vacationed there several times and are planning to more return trips to see the northern areas of the state.

Chicago -another one of a kind, yes a big city but it has its own unique flavor different than any other city in the U.S. We like to take short weekend trips to different cities to go sightseeing, visit the landmarks and find unique restaurants for dining out. I was pleasantly surprised on my first trip to Chicago at how friendly the people are and how clean the city is. The city is filled with activity and there is a lot to see with plenty of places to party. During the Christmas season downtown Chicago is a wonderful place to be and see all or the lights and decorations throughout the town. Dress warm as it is very cold and windy as the cold air comes off the lake and snow flurries can happen at any time.

Europe -  London, Paris, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, France and many more. Europe is a large territory for travel that most people target to visit their ancestors place of origin. Travel overseas is expensive, your travel plans should be well thought out to get the best prices on airfares and hotel stays. Consider a combination trip of a cruise and air to visit multiple locations. Our first destination was Zurich, Switzerland, then we traveled down to Rome, Italy many years ago and we are planning a return trip to Italy soon.

Italy- If you are considering a vacation to Italy plan to stay at least 10 days to 2 weeks if possible. I can’t even to begin to list all of the places to see in Italy and will leave that up to you to do your own research on the regions. There is so much beautiful countryside to see along with historical landmarks, it can be overwhelming in a one week vacation. Do plenty of research and planning for a trip here and consider the weather for the time of year you will visit. When we vacationed in Italy in mid October, it was cool with fall like weather in Rome. We traveled by train from Geneve, Switzerland to Rome seeing all of the natural landscape throughout the train ride. We arrived in Rome with no hotel reservations and made plans as we traveled. If you have not been to Europe be prepared to experience a very different lifestyle than ours in the U.S.

There are many places to go on a vacation and this list shows just some of the most popular winter vacation spots. The main objective is to get away and have fun no matter where you go. If you are traveling with children plan activities that they can participate in and allow some time for you and your spouse to enjoy yourselves, plan a romantic evening out or dinner cruise.
